Despite the old adage "beauty is only skin deep", the bony structure beneath plays an important role in determining one's appearance. This is particularly true for the chin. Proper chin projection, symmetry, and proportion are integral to overall facial harmony. A chin that is too small can make the nose appear larger than it is, may project an attitude of indecision or submissiveness, and may contribute to sagging of the front part of the upper neck (often referred to as a double chin). Placement of a chin implant, known as chin augmentation (mentoplasty), is a safe, permanent method of correcting a receding chin providing a stronger, better-defined profile.
